Health Post Inaugurated in Rolwaling Village

KATHMANDU: Renowned climber Phurba Tenjing Sherpa, who has summited Mt. Everest 14 times, has successfully completed and handed over a new health post building in Beding village, located in Gaurishankar Rural Municipality-1 of Dolakha.

The health post was constructed in memory of his father and the villagers who passed away due to a lack of timely medical treatment. “In 2004, my father died of a foot-related illness. No one in the village knew what it was. He was airlifted to Kathmandu when his condition worsened, but it was too late. If we had a health post back then, he might have survived,” said Sherpa, emotionally recalling the incident that inspired the project.

After five years of continuous effort, a three-room health post building has now been completed. However, Sherpa said the dream was not fully realized until the post was staffed. For three years, they waited for government support.

That moment finally came when, in coordination with Phurba Tenjing Sherpa, the Government of Nepal appointed a Health Assistant to the post. This marked the first time in Rolwaling’s history that a government health worker was stationed in the village, bringing basic medical care within reach of the remote community.

Sherpa also expressed relief that the health worker reached the village during the COVID-19 lockdown, offering much-needed medical support at a critical time. It was through this appointment that COVID-19 vaccinations became possible in the village for the first time. For a remote region like Rolwaling, this access to vaccination was a milestone in public health and safety.

The health post now stands not only as a vital service center but also as a symbol of Sherpa’s unwavering commitment to his community's wellbeing and resilience.
