Mr. Phurba Tenjing Sherpa from Rolwaling village of Gaurishankar, Dolakha, Nepal, is a highly-experienced renown mountaineer of Nepal. He has successfully climbed Everest 14 times with records of two ascents in 10days in 2007, two ascents in 3 days in 2008 and 2017 and two ascents without supplementary oxygen. He holds the record of the most successful ascents (9) of Mt. Everest at the youngest age-24years. Together with his siblings, he has two records in Guinness Book of World Records namely ‘Most siblings climbing together an 8000-m mountain’ and ‘Most siblings to have climbed Everest’.
He started his mountaineering career as a porter in Tashi Laptcha Pass at the age of 15. His first climb was of Yala Peak (5732m) in 2004. After climbing the Island peak (6160m) in 2005 and Ramdung Peak (5975m) in 2006, he conquered the world's highest mountain, the Mt. Everest (8848m) twice in 10 days in spring 2007 with Japanese group and in 2008 he again made two successful ascents of Everest within 3 days. Phurba together with his brothers Pemba Dorjee and Pemba Gyalzen have led the expedition of “First Inclusive Women Sagarmatha Expedition 2008”. It became the largest group of women to summit the Mt. Everest. In the same year, Phurba and the team of his brothers led “Min Bahadur Sherchan Expedition 2008”. At the age of 77, Mr. Sherchan was recognized as the oldest person to climb the Mt. Everest. He with his brother in 2009 had placed a statue of Lord Gautam Buddha on top of Mt. Everest. In 2013, they helped selflessly to Sudarshan Gautam who was the first disable person to climb the Mt. Everest.
Driving by his passion for mountains, he has climbed more than a dozen mountains including Mt. Manaslu, Mt. Muztagh Ata, Mt. Amadablam, Lobuche, Mera, Pharchamo etc. He climbed Mt. Amadablam as a Goodwill ambassador of Visit Nepal Year 2011 appointed by Nepal Government and stayed on top for 10 hours. A team led by him made the first successful ascent of virgin peak Khang Karpo (6646m) in 2016. In 2017, Sherpa led the International Climbing team to the summit of the Everest and in autumn he was an expedition leader of 5 members to an attempt of Mt. Manaslu. In 2017, the Rt. Honorable President Bidhya Devi Bhandari honored him by “National Youth Award” for his contributions in National Mountaineering Industry.
In 2018, Phurba Tenjing Sherpa led a group of five female journalists from Nepal and an international team to Mount Everest successfully. ‘First Women Journalists Everest Expedition’ team is the first ever team of journalists to scale the highest mountain in the world in 65 years history of successful climbing of the Mount Everest. This expedition was supported Nepal Government, Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.
In 2019, he led the first Chinese women’s team to the top of the world, Everest which was fourth national all-women team to do so after India, Nepal and Singapore. Also, his team of three women from three nations (India, Nepal and China), was the one to flutter the official flag of Visit Nepal year 2020, signed by the immediate Prime Minister of Nepal, Honorable K.P. Sharma Oli, from the summit of Everest. Also, Mr. Gopal Shrestha, the first HIV positive climber to summit the Everest, was led by him to the mission.
During his latest expedition, an ultra-runner and first Everest Summiteer from Hongkong Ms. Tsang Yin Hung became the fastest women to climb Everest in 25hrs and 50min. Recently, Sherpa has climbed Amadablam with the former defense Minister of Croatia.
Also, he is the goodwill ambassador of We Will Rise Foundation. Collaborating with friends from Austria, Italy and Germany, he is working on development of his village Rolwlaing.
