Josef Einwaller (Austria)

Entrepreneur and Mountaineer

Mr. Josef Einwaller considers Nepal as his Second home. When Josef Einwaller came to Nepal for the first time in 1988 as a tourist, he was mesmerized by the natural beauty of this Himalayan nation situated in the lap of Mount Everest. Since then, he has visited Nepal, which he says is his second home, more than 50 times and has climbed many mountains including Everest, Amadablam, Cho Oyu, Pumori among many others. In 2012, he summited Mount Everest with his Nepali son Phurba Tenjing Sherpa.

During his long association with the Sherpas in his long mountaineering career, he was highly influenced by the Sherpa’s life, their honesty, and culture. He gradually developed an emotional attachment towards them.

With the 2006 tragic Mt. Pumori accident, in which he lost his guide/best friend Phurba Thundu Sherpa in course of a mountaineering expedition, his aim of life took a slight turn. Since then he has been striving to do something that would help improve the livelihood of the people in Rolwaling valley of Dolakha, the hometown of his guide. Also, he had built a house in Kathmandu for the family of his guide and is taking care of his family financially.

Rolwaling these days is still like Nepal of 50 years ago with no electricity, mobile and internet facilities. It has been completely cut off from those facilities, which seem as basic needs of this century of information and communications. So, he has a dream that at least this village, a complete Sherpa settlement, would have solar panels, communication, and health facilities. Chasing his dream, Einwaller managed to construct a three-room health post in Rolwaling, with the help of his team to raise the fund, the first-ever medical facility in the village.

He with his team from Austria and Nepal has built a shelter (Biwak) at Upper Jaboo (4050m) on the route of Rolwaling to Khumbu Region also known as Tashi Lapcha, enhancing safe travel via Tashi Laptcha to promote Rolwaling Valley for global tourism. The Biwak has been named 'David Lama Biwak' in honor of famous, talented, dynamic climber Late David Lama.

Mr. Einwaller is actively working on the social welfare of Nepal since the 2015 earthquake.
